Dr. Brion Winston has over 10 years of post-graduate experience diagnosing and treating heart and vascular disease.  He focuses on structural heart and valve disease intervention, coronary and vascular intervention,  and general cardiology.

He grew up on Staten Island and attended Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan.  A graduate of Wesleyan University in Connecticut, he was awarded a Howard Hughes fellowship in the life sciences studying evolutionary biology.  He received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn where he was awarded a scholarship to study in Kenya.

He received his master’s degree from Columbia University in environmental health where he studied the health impacts and projections for climate change in the Northeast.

He did his residency in internal medicine at New York University where he fell in love with cardiology.

He practiced for a year with the Indian Health Service in rural Chinle, Arizona providing cardiac services before moving to Pittsburgh for three years of cardiology fellowship.

At UPMC Dr. Winston published and presented research in stem cell therapy for heart and vascular disease, invasive imaging of carotid disease, and structural heart therapy of the aortic valve.   He founded a free cardiology clinic for the uninsured–still operational and staffed by UPMC fellows and attendings–and was awarded the Outstanding Fellow distinction among his 30 peers in training.

He completed a fourth year of fellowship in interventional cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He practiced in South Dakota for two years where he conducted medication and device clinical studies before joining Capital Cardiology Associates in 2013.

Dr. Winston enjoys working on his family’s organic farm raising cattle in Hoosick with his wife and two children, and writing music.

He performs procedures at Albany Med, St. Peters, and Samaritan Hospitals.
